This week was a busy one. We worked on an art project that will be up during parent teacher conferences. We had to paint a large rectangle using only 3 colours: black, white and one other color of our choice. We learned about tints, shades and monochromatic painting.
We also read 2 very interesting books. One was called Shi Shi Etco and the other was Shin Chi's Canoe. They are about a girl and her brother who had to go to residential school. We learned that first nation's children were forced to go to residential schools by the government. The kids were treated very badly while they were there. We learned about Phyllis Webstad and how her brand new orange shirt was taken away from her on her first day of school. This is why we recognize Orange Shirt Day every September.
Terry Fox was another Canadian Hero. He had cancer and decided to raise money for cancer research by running across Canada. He wanted to raise one dollar for every Canadian. He was not able to make it across Canada as his cancer came back when he was in Thunder Bay Ontario. Today there are runs all across Canada to raise money in his name.
Don't forget to book parent teacher conferences for October 6th and 7th,
