Week 7

This week we started Math groups with Miss Macleod's class.  Right now in Math we are learning about place value.  Ms Greave's group learned about addition and subtraction in math centers.  Mrs McLellan's group is working on place value to 10 000, we played Yahtzee to help up learn this.  Miss Macleod's group is working on place value to a thousand, we used the power of 10 cards to help us.

In Science this week, we learned about the three types of rocks: Sedimentary, Igneous and Metamorphic.  Some Igneous rocks have holes in them or crystals because they are made out of lava.  Sedimentary rocks are like chocolate chip cookies, they have pieces inside them that can break.  They are formed usually under the water from sediment that comes from erosion.  Metamorphic rocks are formed underground from pressure and heat from the Earth.

Next week we are having an in-school field trip on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.  We are going to be having Scientists in Schools come in to teach us more about Rocks and Minerals.  We are still looking for parent volunteers to help us out with this.  If you have a current police clearance and can come in to help either afternoon, please let Mrs McLellan or Ms Greaves know.

In Health, we are learning about wants and needs and The Rights of the Child.  We learned that we are very lucky in Canada.  Some kids don't get to school.  Some kids don't have clean water to drink.  Some kids have to work instead of getting to play.

We continued to work on descriptive writing.  This week we did some writing about zombies, mummies and monsters!  We drew our own monsters in our visual journals and used descriptive words to describe them.

This year at CJFS, students get to wear costumes to school on Halloween!  Costumes need to be appropriate for school, that means they aren't too scary (no blood, no weapons - please leave these at home), they don't have a full face mask.  If students don't want to dress up they could wear orange and black or their regular clothes.  We are not going to bring candy to school before or after Halloween.

We have noticed that there are a number of students in Room 12/14 that wear glasses, but never have them as school.  This makes learning very difficult.  It is important for students to come to school ready to learn, this includes wearing their glasses.
