March 2, 2018

This week we came home with a number of important forms.  We are going on a field trip to the Calgary Humane Society on March the 14th.  We need forms to be brought back by next Wednesday, March the 7th.  We also got forms about borrowing or buying recorders for Music.  These forms need to be brought back as soon as possible.  There will also be a bake sale on March the 15th at our celebration of learning.

In Gym this week, we did mission impossible.   The mission seemed to be impossible for some students but some students were very successful.  Next week we will be starting hockey.

On Wednesday, our school celebrated Pink Shirt Day.  We learned that people wear pink shirts on that day to prevent bullying.  This was started after a student in Nova Scotia was made fun of for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school.

For the celebration of learning, we are having an art walk.  Students will be coming to the school with their parents and taking them around to see all of the art that was created with the Artist in Residence.  In preparation for the art walk, we have written Artist Biographies and Artist Statements about our art.  We are looking forward to showing you our masks.

For our read aloud in class, we have started to read The One and Only Ivan.  It's based on a true story about a Silverback Gorilla that lives in a mall.  Ivan lives in a "domain", it's not like his real habitat, it has 3 glass and one cement wall and a cement floor.  We learned that we can read the book on Tumblebooks.  The link is on the CJFS blog, you don't need a password to log in.

In Social Studies, we are learning about India.  We have learned about their quality of life, food, transportation, holidays and traditions, resources.  We are going to be having a test about India in about 2 weeks.  We will have a study guide coming home next week.

In Science we learned about the 4 different types of bridges.  They are: beam, suspension, truss and arch.  We also did some research about bridge failures and collapses.  We are going to be building bridges next week.

In math this week we have been learning about multiplication.  We have learned strategies for solving multiplication equations.  Some of the strategies are: making equal groups, repeated addition, using arrays, fact families, skip counting, doubling and for 4s double the double.
