This week we began to work with the artist in residence on paper mache masks. We chose animals from one of the four countries that we are studying in Social Studies. There were many steps to make the masks. The first step was to make 2 cuts in the paper plate and fold and tape it to make it a 3D shape. The next step was to create a nose out of newspaper and tape it into place on the plate. Then we created the ears out of paper. The last step was to cover it with paper mache and let it dry. The paper mache felt weird, boogery, gooey and slimy. Some students didn't like it very much.
This week in music we learned that we are going to see the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra on February 6th. We have been learning about the instruments that play in the orchestra. Today we had a special guest come to show us a viola and a violin. We learned that they are both string instruments and they both have horsehair string on the bow. The viola makes a deeper sound than the violin. They were different sizes, the violin was much smaller than the viola.
Next week we will be having student-led conferences during parent-teacher interviews. You will still have a chance to talk to the teacher but the students will be showing parents what they have been learning in school. We look forward to sharing our learning with you.
