Happy New Year

Welcome to 2018!  This week has been very cold outside, we noticed that most students have been well prepared for the cold.  It's really important for all students to be prepared for cold weather during the winter months.

In Science we are becoming engineers.  Engineers are people who design and build things.  We have started by having a challenge to see who could make the longest chain with 2 pieces of paper, 30 cm of tape and a ruler and some scissors.  Our winners made a chain that was 540 cm long!  We learned about a fair test and why it is important in science to always perform a fair test.  We also learned about arches and squares and performed an experiment to determine which was stronger.   We learned that arches are stronger than squares.

Our Math groups have changed and we are all working on patterns at the moment.  Miss McLeod's group is learning about increasing and decreasing patterns.  Mrs McLellan's group worked with Miss Beamer and learned about math talks and worked on restating and adding on to other's ideas.  Ms Greaves group has also been working on patterns.

In Social Studies, we are learning about the 4 countries and their landforms.  We learned that Ukraine has a lot of hills, mountains and has seas in the south.  They have the Carpathian mountain range there.

In Language Arts we learned about procedural writing.  We learned that procedural writing includes giving directions, having steps, lists ingredients or materials needed.  We might find this type of writing in a how to book, in a cook book, a science experiment, or in instructions for a game or toy.

In gym this week we learned how to Curl and how to play Gaga ball.   Some of the students are quite skilled curlers.

Next week we will be working with an artist in residence to create 3D animal masks.  We will be using a variety of materials and then learning about the animals that come from one of the 4 countries that we are studying.  We will need parent volunteers to assist with this.  Our first time will be Wednesday January 17th in the afternoon.  Please let your child's teacher know if you are able to volunteer.  Volunteers must have police clearance to volunteer.
