February 9 2018

It has been a cold and snowy week at CJFS!

We began the week with a field trip to Jack Singer Concert hall to see the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Here are some thoughts about what we saw and heard that day:
Ibsa - The double bass was really big.
Maniv - We sat very high up in the audience on the third balcony.
Dev - The concert hall was huge.
Nevaeh - We got to see all of the instruments that we have been learning about in music.
Reet - At the end of the concert when they played all the instruments together it sounded like harmony.
Sanket - We also saw the french horns.
Justine_ I loved the bassoons the best because it is low.
Arpit - We saw the strings family.
Annika - The nerds in the story told us about the four families.
Shreya - I liked the flute because it sounded like the bird from Peter and the Wolf.
Denis - The trombone was super long.
Alveena - I liked the harp because it sounded nice.
Ayub- I liked the nerds in the story because they were funny.

On Tuesday afternoon, we had our last session with the artist in residence and we added the final touches to our masks. They sure look good.

In Math this week, we have continued to look at patterns.   In Miss McLeod's group, they have been working on challenge cards to help them to solve algebraic equations.  We have to figure out what value the different shapes had in the equations.  In Mrs McLellan's group we have continued to work on number patterns and we learned about Fibonacci numbers.  Ask me to explain the rule for the pattern 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55..... This pattern is found in many places in nature in swirls, leaves, flowers, seeds...   In Ms Greave's math group we have been working on skip counting patterns by threes and fours. 

In gym this week we started gymnastics.  We have been working on mats and working on different ways to move across the mats.  We worked on high, medium and low levels of moving. 

In Science this week we learned that cylindrical pillars are the strongest shapes and can hold more than triangular or rectangular.   It is the strongest because it doesn't have corners or flat surfaces that can buckle. 

Next week is a short week because of Teacher's Convention which means we only have school Monday to Wednesday.  It is supposed to be warmer next week, but we still need to come dressed warmly and prepared to go outside with boots, snow pants, toques, mittens and warm jackets.    We will be going outside to snow shoe one of the afternoons.

Next Wednesday is Valentines Day.  Students are welcome to bring valentines to their classmates if they wish.  We ask that students don't bring candy to school, they may bring pencils, stickers, erasers or other non edible treats if they wish.  Students will have a list of the first names of their classmates in their agendas today. 

Fun lunch is coming up, orders for Pizza 73 can be placed at https://www.healthyhunger.ca or you may pay at the office if you don't have a computer to use. Orders for fun lunch are due Wednesday February 14th.
